From Training to Lab Launch:
Building An IVF lab with Skill and Confidence
When Udo Mahne and Vicky Cameron, Founders of BoviGenesis, identified a growing demand for alternative reproductive solutions in the Australian cattle industry, they saw an opportunity, but also a gap in their own experience. With backgrounds in MOET and equine veterinary work, they recognised that transitioning into bovine IVF services required both technical capability and thoughtful execution.
To bridge that gap, they undertook a three-day intensive embryology training program with ART Lab Solutions in Adelaide, South Australia.
The training program provided a complete, hands-on immersion into the in vitro embryo production (IVEP) process, from oocyte collection and grading through to fertilisation, culture, and cryopreservation. More importantly, it translated theory into real-world application. As Vicky noted, “There are things you can read on paper, but until you try it, you can’t really get it.”
A key differentiator was the depth of practical experience during the training. Handling embryos at multiple stages, practicing vitrification, and understanding subtle differences, such as the behaviour of in vivo versus in vitro embryos. This handling gave both participants the confidence to operate independently. The open sharing of knowledge, lab setup insights, and ongoing post-training support further accelerated their readiness in building an IVF lab from scratch.
Following the training, Udo and Vicky moved quickly. Within weeks, they had started the establishment of their own IVF laboratory, overcoming logistical challenges, sourcing specialised equipment, and preparing to service their first client. Today, IVF is a core part of their business model, enabling them to offer advanced reproductive breeding options and meet evolving client needs.
Reflecting on the experience, their message is clear: “The embryology training with ART Lab solutions is absolutely vital. We wouldn’t have dared to try without proper supervised training… it made it seem achievable, realistic, and easy.” This case highlights that under the right guidance, starting your own IVF lab is not only possible, but achievable. ART Lab Solutions continues to support professionals like Udo and Vicky in turning capability into commercial reality.
We wish Udo and Vicky all the best in their cattle IVF operations, and we will be here to support them every step of the way.
